Wine and Beer etc
Wine and beer can be a problem for vegans. Fining agents used to clarify them are often animal derived - isinglass, gelatine, egg albumen etc.
Fortunately, there are now several easy ways to purchase vegan wines and beers
There are several companies who specialize in organic wines and beers and they are generally very aware of which of their products are vegan:
- The Pure Wine Company, Ocean House, 51 Alcantara Crescent, Ocean Village, Southampton, Hamps, SO14 3HR, 023 80238214
- Vincermos, 74 Kirkgate, Leeds, LS2 7DJ, 0113 244 0002
- Vintage Roots, Farley Farms, Bridge Farm, Reading Rd, Arborfield, Berks, RG2 9HT, 0800 9804992
- Lurgashall Wines, English fruit wines. We tasted these. Our favourite is the Silver Birch (medium sweet but very tasty) and the Blackberry (rounded fruity flavours). The meads and ginger liqueur contain honey, so are not vegan.
If you want a quantity of beer for a special occasion/party or something, then Milton Brewery (ie local to Cambridge) is able to sell beer before it goes through the fining process (which is the very last thing to be done) by special order.
Alternatively, you could try your local Co-op since they have an excellent labelling scheme listing all ingredients in wines and stating suitability for vegetarians and vegans.
There is also plenty of information on suitable wines and beers in the Animal Free Shopper.
In addition, several supermarkets provide a means to order vegan wine online (which tends to be easier than trying to find it in-store), for example:
- Tesco - choose 'advanced search'
- Waitrose - choose 'select own case' then 'special selection'
